Speedo drive pinions
Can anyone suggest the part number for the speedo drive pinion for an accurate speedo reading with a Smiths large speedo (200kmh type) with a 3.444:1 final drive and 165/60x12 tyres on Minilife 12x5 rims? Ive seen a new speedo of said type for £70, boxed, and wonder if it is a good price. Has anyone replaced the fuel gauge in this type of speedo with the internals from another gauge, such as a voltmeter? I say this because the car I am building will have two fuel gauges (and two filler caps) so the obvious thing would be a matching pair of 2 Smiths classic gauges, and to use the redundant hole in the bottom of the speedo for something I only have one of, like voltmeter, oil temperature, or pressure. That said, I have capillary oil temp and oil pressure gauges, with 270 travel, so it will have to be the voltmeter, or nothing. Maybe I will try wiring it up as an average of the two tanks gauge...

Hi, You need to change the speedo drive gear in the gearbox, its under the housing the speedo cable screws onto. Unfortunately I dont know which is the correct gear for your new ratio. Cheers, Gavin :-)

1275 MG Metro Engine Speedo Drive
Ive installed an MG metro 1275cc engine into my mini, but I cant get the mini speedo to read properly... The mini is running on 13 wheels so the ratio should be the same or close to it.. The speedo seems to stutter as if the cable is slipping or catching and gets worse the faster I go. I would install an original mini cable but the housing on the engine side is different to the cable. Im currently using a metro cable which I cutomised by fitting the mini union on the clock end.

the 13" as they usually have lower profile tires usually have same overal diamiter as std 12" wheels overal diameter is near 20", so speedo shud still read near enouth, 145/70 R12 tires have aprox same diameter as 175/50 R13.
14.5cm / 2.5 x (70%+70%) + 12" = 20.1"
17.5cm /2.5 x (50% +50%) + 13 = 20"
thats assuming it originally came with 12" wheels which i would expect as its 93

Speedo drive confusion
Hi people - I havnt been in here for a while.
My mini developed a nasty whine whilst accelerating (sort of ordinary mini whine amplified) and grinding, chattering, whirring with the clutch out in neutral which we're pretty sure is something to do with the transfer gear roller bearings.
Im sure Ill find out with the engine out tomorrow.
But my main issue is whilst Ive got the engine out I'm swapping my 3.44 for a 3.1 final drive to go with my ever so powerful 1098 engine ;)
However Ive no idea how to get the speedo working right.
My gearbox is a 60s pudding stirrer 4 synchro unit (so pre A+ then) and the car runs on 165/60/12 tyres. The speedo is the centre type and the turns per mile on it are 1280 which seems to give me a reasonable level of accuracy (I was coping anyway ha ha.)
Ive looked at the parts on the mini spares website and they've done nothing but confuse me further!
Does anyone have the foggiest idea what I need to get it somewhere near being right?
Desperate mini man in need of urgent help! Cheers people!

if its an a series box im pritty sure u cant change any speedo drive gears as they varyied the speedo for the diff ratio. unfortunatly they never made a centre speedo for 3.1 ratio. my nebour was saying there used to be people that made speedo ratio converts iv not managed to find any asept for one to convert from mph to kph.

Ah yes I saw that whilst researching myself.
So I suppose my best option is to basically leave things the way they are and see if I can get the speedo recalibrated... what do you think?
Many thanks,
Rob.

Hi, Im currently building a new engine and box and would like to change the speedo spindle drives before i put it in. Im currently using a 3.9 final drive an a A+ rod change box, 12" wheels and also a cooper 100mph speedometer. My question is what ratio drives should i buy to have an accurate reading?

speedo drive gears
Does anyone know what speedo drive gear was used on the JCG s pack of the late 80`s onwards mini`s. the conversion used a 3.44 dif and was marketed for racing/flame 1000cc models and the RSP 1275 coopers.I distinctly remember the drive gear being included in the DIY kit.Youre help would be appreciated but Please dont say speedy cables

The 1990 versions of the Mini Flame Red LE and Mini Racing Green LE (along with the black Mini Check Mate LE) got fitted with the 3.44 diff as standard.

The RSP Mini Cooper only got the 3.44 diff when the JCG Cooper S Conversion was carried out. It got the 3.1 final drive as standard: -

Anyway if nobody else here knows what speedo drive gear was used, then it'd be worth asking Mike Raven at 'Classic Mini's', because they took all the classic Mini stuff from JCG. The owner (Mike) is an ex-JCG employee: -

But also check this pdf page from Somerford Minis: -
Somerford link
Would item '82' part number 'DAM6028' (GEAR, drive, 7 teeth (blue paint coded) 1984-1992, 12" road wheels, 998, 3.444:1 final drive, be what you're after?

Thanks for the information and links, I can see in the 's' pack brochure a yellow coded pinion gear is supplied in the kit, unfortunately I can only find a yellow coded spindle gear which mates with a black pinion gear in the parts catalogues. I have also emailed classic minis and am awaiting a response. As for the item on the Somerford link I am guessing that would only suit a 998 speedo head that reads upto 90mph and not the Coopers 110mph (I only realised they were different by looking on ebay).
Cheers Abs
